Formerly mounted as folding screen in six panels. Pseudo-cylindrical globe projection, with equator, latitude and longitude lines, bordered by registers indicating degrees, minutes, seconds. This map is a copy of the 1602 world map Kunyu wanguo quantu (Japanese: Ri Matō Konʼyo bankoku zenzu) produced by Matteo Ricci (1552-1610) at the request of the Emperor of ChinaMatteo Ricci was an Italian Jesuit priest and an influential member of the Jesuit Mission in China. This was the first world map to be printed in China based upon Western cartography. Copies of the Ricci map made their way to Japan, where they were reprinted and copied. This world map is one such example, and may have been copied from the first edition of the Ricci map, as its dimensions are similar (approximately 5 x 12"), and in six panels just as the first printing of the Kunyu wanguo quantu. Later versions of the Kunyu wanguo quantu tended to be in smaller formatsOf the six extant copies of Ricci's original 1602 map, three are held in Japan, at Kyoto University, the Miyagi Prefecture Library, and the Library of the Japanese Cabinet. A full-color two-page woodblock-printed copy of the 1602 Ricci map was produced in Japan in 1604, one copy of which is now held by Tōhoku University. Whereas the 1604 Japanese copy uses katakana to inscribe the names of foreign countries and places, the Brigham Young University map employs hiragana. BYU's map reproduces some, but not all, of the Chinese annotations from the Kunyu wanguo quantuMap stored in paper pouch. Inscription on pouch indicates the map was made in the fourth month of Kyōhō 9 (1724). Title on pouch reads: Bankoku zu, Chūka zu (Map of the World, Map of China), and so it is likely this world map was originally paired with a map of China.
